Black Carbon Emissions

Durwood Zaelke offered some very interesting insight into future climate change policy in his interview with Environment and Energy News on their OnPoint video segment.

Zaelke, founder of the Institute of Governance and Sustainable Development, and possessing an accomplished background in Environmental Law, mentioned that while carbon emission reductions are important actions in mitigating climate change, other non CO2 emissions, such as black carbon (aka soot) should be regulated to provide more effective climate temperature control strategies:

Black carbon works its dirty work in two ways. It absorbs heat from above as an aerosol and when it's deposited on snow and ice it darkens them and then causes the absorption of more sunlight, so it accelerates melting of snow and ice.


To those unfamiliar with the natural global thermal controls, ice and snow are great reflector of solar radiation, due to the highly reflective properties of their white color. The soot is not only allowing the planet's surface to absorb more heat from the sun, but it's also reducing the surface's ability to reject heat by reducing ice and snow coverings.

Furthermore, Zaelke stated that any significant carbon emission reduction would take a significant amount of time before its associated cooling effect could be felt ...


As important as that is, and it's absolutely critical we must do that, but cutting CO2 emissions does not produce significant cooling for at least a thousand years


To produce a CO2 related cooling effect, Zaelke suggested on relying on biological carbon sequestering methods, such as bio-char

we need to produce bio-char. This is the process where you hydrolyze or basically cook with low oxygen any biomass to make fine-grained charcoal that you can put back in the soil as a soil enhancement and it provides permanent carbon storage. That's the only strategy, this bio sequestration that can take us backwards because it can suck out CO2 from the atmosphere and put it back into permanent storage.
